The Benefits of Writing Elementary Lesson Plans

Writing elementary lesson plans is a preliminary and essential stage that helps increase the success-rate of anything you are teaching in an elementary class room. A well-planned lesson or unit which a detailed elementary lesson plan is much less likely to flop!

Lessons that are well planned are more likely to help students and teachers. There are many benefits you can achieve from writing elementary lesson plans. Here are just a few.

•Elementary lesson plans help teachers avoid frustrations and unpleasant surprises

•Help teachers to stay on track and not get side tracked

•Elementary lesson plans help teachers to achieve their lesson objectives

•Lesson planning also allows the teacher to visualize (and, therefore, better prepare for) every step of the teaching process in advance. This visualization typically increases teacher success

•A well done elementary lesson plans can also "save" your class if for some reason you can't be there to teach. The lesson plan will provide invaluable guidance for the substitute teacher.

•Elementary lesson plans also provide a record that allows good, reflective teachers to go back, analyze their own teaching (what went well, what didn't), and then improve on it in the future.

•In addition, this record will save you time in the future. When you teach similar lessons you can refer back to your old elementary lesson plans (kept on file) and "recycle" the successful elements (instead of starting "from scratch").

•Elementary lesson plans help to provide documentary evidence of what you have taught to your students.

In summary although it requires an investment of time and energy, lesson planning produces many valuable benefits. Don't you think it's worth it?

How to Write an Elementary Lesson Plan

Writing elementary lesson plans should be fun and easy. Sure they initially take a little bit of time; however you will find that your lesson will help you and your students get the most out of every lesson that you teach them. You are less likely to look back with regrets of things you wish you could have done better.

I like to use a template to help remind me of all the steps I should follow when writing my elementary lesson plans. Here are some templates I like to use. http://www.emholliday.com/sharing/2007/6/19/lesson-plan-template.html

Finally there are some steps you may want to consider. Some key points I like to include in my elementary lesson plans are;

1.What are your goals or objectives for the lesson that you are about to teach? What is it that you want your students to learn from this lesson? At this stage you should also consider such things as curriculum standards and what you are required to meet.

2.I like to also begin by thinking about some of the key vocabulary that I want to introduce to my students. I like to create a vocabulary list that you will add to as you write out your elementary lesson plans procedure. This will help you remember terms that you need to make sure the students understand as they work through the lesson.

3.What materials are required during you lesson. How many times have you forgotten to bring to the classroom some key material or equipment that was vital to the running of your lesson. This can be both frustrating to you and time wasting for your students. By creating a materials list with all the equipment, copies, worksheets etc you will need.

4.Have you considered an engagement activity for your lesson? A engagement activity help to get you students actively involved in the lesson your about to teach and helps them to connect with the topic immediately.

5.What methods will you use to teach the content of the lesson? Lessons can be taught in many different ways. Will you be lecturing your students? Will they be working in small groups or independently? Maybe the will be working on computers or perhaps you may decide to conduct a field trip. Whatever method you plan to use, document this in your elementary lesson plans.

6.Once you determine how you will present your lesson, write out step by step instructions in your elementary lesson plan.

7.At the conclusion of each lesson I like to enjoy a few moments with my students reviewing some of the things they have learnt from the lesson. This time also gives me the opportunity to reinforce some of the key points I have tried to get across in the lesson.

8.Another key consideration you will want to address in your elementary lesson plans are accommodations you may need to make for your class including accommodations for ESL and special education. I like to also consider the different learning styles of all my students and will always try to design activities that will cater for the different learning needs.

9.Once you have completed your elementary lesson plans, finish out the details including creating the assessments, homework assignments, and any handouts.
